This program was adapted from my Master’s thesis at the University of Florida, where I studied the gut microbiome’s influence on neurodevelopmental differences—particularly in children with ADHD, autism, and depression. Since then, I’ve expanded this work into a supportive, science-backed program for individuals of all ages seeking better focus, mood, digestion, and overall vitality. Abstract
The gut microbiome significantly impacts neurodevelopmental differences in cognitive function and can be used to reframe these ‘disorders’ within a cause-and-effect framework that supports targeted interventions. Genetic predispositions that allow for epigenetic modifications that alter neurological development cause conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and depression. Since the gut microbiome begins forming in the prenatal period and continues to evolve through adulthood, these alterations can be intervened at any stage of development with the optimization of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), though earlier interventions yield superior outcomes (Swann, 2023). Interventions through dietary modifications and SCFA-producing prebiotics hold promise for reshaping the microbiome and, subsequently, the developing mind in as little as 4 weeks (Wang et al., 2022). These SCFAs directly regulate neuroinflammatory cascades and neuroplasticity pathways within the central nervous system and hold key insights for future navigation of neurodevelopmental optimization. This review emphasizes the critical relationship between optimal gut microbiota composition and subsequent neural function, highlighting neuroprotective mechanisms that can alleviate symptoms across various neurological conditions. Further research is needed to pinpoint the exact molecular mechanisms underlying neuroinflammation and the interconnectedness of these neurodevelopmental differences, potentially reducing the over-reliance on antibiotics and pharmaceuticals in neonatal and early development. Optimization of the gut microbiome in the developing mind, through dietary modifications and probiotic supplementation, and in the prenatal phase of pregnancy, can reduce the impact of the epigenetic modifications that result in diverse neurological symptoms affecting cognitive function.
